読書の意味
過去の文化に最も簡単にふれる方法は、本を読むことである。これはまた、歴史上の偉人と友人になるためのほとんど唯一の方法でもある。しかし、「本を読む」とは、それほど簡単な行為ではない。すこし考えてみれば当たり前のことであるが、読書にもそれ相応の訓練が必要なのである。
読書とは、針の穴から隣人をのぞき見て、その全人格を理解するようなものである。「文は人なり」とは、作品に表れた著者の人となりを汲み取る技術を持った者、すなわち、与えられた針の穴を等身大にまで拡大し、それを飲み干せる技術を持った者のみが実感しうるのである。当世風に言えば、その人となりを一度言葉という名の細胞に分解して、通信回線を用いて送信し、受信側にて再構成する。この回線に当るものが書物であり、再構成する技術が、すなわち「読書術」である、となるだろう。
